Two Fouls but not out yet...

One of the lessons I am learning with this GAME plan is that do not expect everything to go as planned and be open and flexible to adapt your ideas to new paths.  I feel as if I am taking one step forward and two steps back.  For example, I was on my third anchor of finding interactive resources when I was called down to test some kindergarten students.  I quick locked my computer and went down to test 8 students.  Upon my return I noticed my computer was not locked but logged off.  The data guy had come to fix my connection to the color printer.  When he logged me off he did not save my work.  Another lesson learned.  It would have only taken me a few seconds to save the document prior to going to test the students.  So, three hours of work was lost.  The weird part is I usually have an autorecover function, but not this time.  I am still working on collecting these interactive resources for the teachers.  I told some of the teachers about it and they are really excited!  So, this is a goal I am still working toward.  Also, I did get the opportunity to ask my supervisor if I could pilot a problem based learning program in fourth grade for next year.  He said I could, but I did not get the opportunity to talk details with him.  I hope to do that at my meeting with him this Thursday.  If he is still game I will begin to use the current standards to come up with authentic problems.  I still do not know who will be teaching fourth grade next year, so it is hard to determine if they will be game to try something new.  The one teacher I know is staying in fourth grade is willing and ready. We will collaborate often this summer.  I can begin the groundwork planning though.  I know it will be easier with two of us working on it together.

My second NETS-T goal is also still in motion.  I have contacted our district representative for Compass Odyssey to ask him if there is a district step-by-step instructional guide on how to set up students and assignments.  He said there was not but that he would be willing to develop one.  I hope to meet with him to work on this together.  I will discuss this with him on Thursday morning.  I know Compass Odyssey is being used often, but it is not being used to differentiate the way it can.  I will change that with the simple directions and training in the beginning of next year.  Another step I can take toward this direction is to analyze the data for the most recent benchmark test for our third graders.  This will give me specific information, by standard, which I can share with teachers in the beginning of next  year.  I can develop lists of students, per standard, that need additional work on that skill.  This will begin next year with differentiation in mind and will lend itself well to training on Compass Odyssey.

A new learning goal is increasing through my courses at Walden.  I am learning to model digital age work and learning.  I am using digital tools to collaborate and share information with teachers in my school.  I model what I am learning in my courses and train teachers how to use these tools.  I know it will take time for these to be incorporated into their lessons, but I will be persistent.

The learning approaches I will try next time to improve learning are to set small step goals in order to reach the long-term goals.  I know this is a bad time of the year to try new things and to motivate teachers and/or students to learn new skills, but I have had so many setbacks that it is frustrating.  If I set small goals and continue to keep the big picture in mind I will remain flexible and less frustrated.

It's great to see that you have not given up yet. There are a few teacher that I know that would have said the hell with it by now if they encountered some of the issues that you are having. Maybe you could talk to your supervisor about setting up some type of in-service with othe department members and/or other faculty members on how to properly use Compass Odysey

  2. Lynne,
As you said it is a learning process. I am glad you have been able to continue working towards your goals despite the setbacks. I hope you learn soon who you will be working with next year. Good luck with your 4th grade intitiatives for next year. Have you thought about setting up a delicious account to share the resources with other teachers? Then they could add ones that they find as well and that would continue the collaboration.

  3. Hi Lynne!

First of all, I am enjoying your creative titles for the weekly updates!

Second, you are quite the go-getter, and I am extremely impressed with your goal to be persistent in teaching educators about the tech tools available to them. You are becoming an educational technologist!

Third, I am sorry about three hours of lost time; however, you have the positive attitude to endure. Go, Lynne!

One last thing, I totally understand how frustrating (Actually, you may be fine, but I get frazzled!) it can be to finalize end-of-year testing. I was barely able to get my ESL testing done as it is a challenge to get the students at the right time, so they do not miss any end-of-year fun, plus many are experiencing burn-out. On top of that, ESL is only a small portion of what I teach. OOps! Many apologies for the sudden "all about me show!"

  4. Lynne,

Our GAME plans are just like life...things do not always play out as we had originally planned and it is important to be open and flexbile. You have been extremely open and flexible in changing your GAME plan when things did not turn out a certain way. I guess that is why the "M" in our GAME plan is so important!

You are off to a good start if your principal agreed to let you pilot a program next year. The time during the summer will you go the needed time to plan what you would like to do and then you could possibly meet with him prior to the start of the next school year to go over what you will doing.

It is great that you are taking the initiative to work with the district representative from Compass Odyssey to create directions and training, this will benefit the students so much.

I like your approach of creating small goals that can be met with the big goal in your mind. I think it is great that you are maintaining a positive outlook with all of the setbacks that you have to work through during the course of your GAME plan. Good luck with your pilot program next year!

  5. Lynne,

Dont you feel like nothing goes as planned? I feel like lately I have had all of these great idea and wanted to implement them and get the principal on board but nothing seems to work out. I have been very frustrated lately with the expectations of the teachers and the lack of funding and time. There are so many wonderful things teachers can do for students but the truth is there is only so much time and money in the world!!

  6. Hi Michael,

Thanks for your kind words. Unfortunately our inservice days are literally scripted for us. It is a shame there is not more freedom in what we can say and do. I can set up an inservice in my building before the students come in though. Great idea, thanks:)

  7. Hi Anna,

Our teacher contract specifies that we are to know our next year placements before the end of this school year. From what I hear we will get our letters on Wednesday. A delicious account is a fabulous idea to share sites with my teachers. Thank you very much for the suggestion!

  8. Hi Megan,

Thanks for commenting about my titles. It is getting a little bit harder to be creative though:) Nice to know it is appreciated. I would never consider myself an educational technologist, but I love to teach and help others learn new things. I know how excited I am to learn what is out there, so why not bring that joy and enthusiasm to others?

Even though I still have a ton to do before the end of the school year, I am not going to allow myself to get frazzled. I find negative energy in education feeds on itself and creates more problems. Instead, I will just do the best I can to get as much as I can accomplished. No one expects more from me than myself, so I am motivated not to let anyone down. Whenever I begin to feel negative I just think about how it could always be worse!

  9. Hi Amy,

Thanks for your kind words. I think I am used to having setbacks and working through them in a positive way. That is how I always try to handle things. Even today a young teacher told me to stop being so positive. I am just a very positive person. I believe that helps me adapt and find success in no matter what I do. It cannot hurt:)

Thank you for the good luck! I will continue to be persistent to help the students and teachers in my school.

  10. Hi Shileah,

Yes, it is frustrating that things do not always go as planned. Instead of dwelling on the frustration I have been attempting to alter my plans to find some success no matter what the obstacles. Our students need us to be positive and proactive on their behalf. I will do whatever I can to make their school experience successful for them.
